MNE (Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs)

In force is the cooperation protocol signed between the Portuguese MNE (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and JusGov, through the CEDU and the DGAE (Directorate-General for European Affairs). The partnership aims to increase the involvement of Portugal in EU (European Union) legal disputes, specifically in preliminary rulings submitted to the TJUE (Court of Justice of the European Union). The protocol also involves other universities – UL (University of Lisbon), UNL (NOVA University of Lisbon) and UCP (Portuguese Catholic University) – and was signed under the PEP (Portuguese State Protocol) on the 4th of April 2014 at the ‘Palácio das Necessidades’ (Palace of the Needs) in Lisbon, followed by a lunch with the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Professor Rui Machete.

The DGAE of the MNE ensures the representation of the Portuguese State at the TJUE and coordinates the establishment of the Portuguese stance in all cases of interest to Portugal which are pending before the EU courts. To this end, the purpose of the protocol is technical and legal cooperation between the DGAE and CEDU in drafting the procedural documents to be submitted by the RP (Portuguese Republic). Meanwhile, the DGAE is committed to providing traineeships for JusGov researchers, including at the REPER (Permanent Representation of Portugal to the European Union) in Brussels.
