On November 25, CEDU researchers participated in the radio programme “O Estado da União” (a partnership between Centro de Informação Europe Direct Minho, Antena Minho and Correio do Minho). Apart from the intervention of Alessandra Silveira, resident commentator at the program and holder of the Jean Monnet Chair in European Union Law at UMinho, this episode counted on the participation of Pedro Froufe (coordinator of CEDU research group and director of the Department of the Public Legal Sciences at EDUM).

Following the resurgence of terrorist attacks in Europe, related to the republication of caricatures of the Islamic prophet Muhammad by the humorous weekly Charlie Hebdo, in this programme speakers addressed the scope of protection of freedom of expression, and the way it relates to freedom of the arts, freedom of information, and religious freedom. Despite being controversial, such cartoons are the result of the existence of a free, pluralistic society based on the values of the rule of law, democracy and human rights.

The radio programme “O Estado da União” is broadcast by Antena Minho (106.0 FM), on the last Wednesday of each month, at 7 pm, and aims to discuss the current European situation. The conversation is usually chaired by Alzira Costa, coordinator of the Centro de Informação Europe Direct Minho, and by Paulo Monteiro, Rádio Antena Minho Director.
