On the 18th of March, 2026, Braga will host a particularly significant occasion for European legal reflection. The European Law Institute (ELI), in partnership with the Research Centre for Justice and Governance (JusGov), the School of Law of the University of Minho (EDUM), and the ELI Portuguese Hub, is organising an integrated programme, to take place exclusively in Braga, devoted to the challenges facing European law in the coming decade.
The initiative brings together two complementary moments. In the afternoon, the ELI Anniversary Roundtable: From Legal Principles to Institutional Impact: The Next Decade of European Law will be held in Braga. Convened in a closed, invitation-only format, with conclusions intended for subsequent public dissemination, this strategic roundtable will bring together academics, lawyers, and members of the judiciary of recognised standing to reflect on the evolution of European law and on the structuring role of universities and research centres in guiding and consolidating that transformation.
The President of the ELI, Professor Teresa Rodríguez de las Heras Ballell, will deliver the keynote address, situating the role of the ELI within the development of European law and the relationship between academic research, public policy, and legal practice. This will be followed by two strategic rounds of discussion: the first devoted to the evolution of the mission of European law, and the second examining the type of legal research that Europe currently requires, addressing the contribution of universities and research centres to ELI projects and to the education and training of legal experts.
On the morning of the same day, the Annual Conference of the ELI Portuguese Hub will take place under the theme “Sustainability, the Rule of Law, and the New Frontiers of Responsibility and Governance”. Structured around two thematic panels, the conference will address issues such as climate litigation, corporate due diligence in the fields of human rights and the environment, the risks of greenwashing, the limits of the ESG model, and emerging paradigms of sustainable governance. Bringing together national and international specialists, this event will solidify Braga’s reputation as a space for qualified dialogue between academia, institutions, and civil society.
