On October 28, CEDU researchers participated in the radio programme “O Estado da União” (a partnership between Centro de Informação Europe Direct Minho, Antena Minho and Correio do Minho). Apart from the intervention of Alessandra Silveira, resident commentator at the program and holder of the Jean Monnet Chair in European Union Law at UMinho, this episode counted on the participation of Pedro Froufe (coordinator of CEDU research group and director of the Department of the Public Legal Sciences at EDUM), and Isabel Camisão (director of the degree in European Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra and deputy director of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra).

This programme addressed issues outside the European Union, exploring a geopolitical priority for the Commission chaired by Ursula von der Leyen: a “stronger Europe in the world”. The idea of a more ambitious Europe in terms of responsible global leadership was analised from the role of trade agreements, the accession of new Member States to the EU, the application of sanctions for violations of human rights, foreign policy and common security. In face of political extremism that threatens European values – human dignity, freedom, equality, democracy and the rule of law – speakers recovered the idea of multilateralism based on consensual rules and their updating.

The radio programme “O Estado da União” is broadcast by Antena Minho (106.0 FM), on the last Wednesday of each month, at 7 pm, and aims to discuss the current European situation. The conversation is usually chaired by Alzira Costa, coordinator of the Centro de Informação Europe Direct Minho, and by Paulo Monteiro, Rádio Antena Minho Director.
