CHALLENGES OF IA FOR MEDICINE AND BIOETHICS (PANEL I)

The advent of AI in medicine raises countless questions and concerns, not least in terms of the impact on patients’ human rights, the exercise of medical activity and potential changes to the traditional (ancestral) doctor-patient relationship.

On the other hand, the AI revolution in scientific research and experimentation will necessarily imply a rethink of the principles that shape bioethics and bio-law.

The lack of legislation and regulation, from the outset, in terms of medical liability for medical error and resulting from the actions of the robot doctor (avatar), the algorithm or other sophisticated software that, in the meantime, becomes autonomous, is a concern that plagues the medical community and jurists dedicated to Bioethics.

As this is such a topical and controversial subject, the entire academic community is invited to attend the event and is encouraged to ask the speakers questions, with a view to a global and dynamic reflection on the challenges of AI in medicine, health law and bioethics.

REAL CHALLENGES OF THE NEW MENTAL HEALTH LAW (PANEL II)

Mental health is one of the biggest health problems facing the Portuguese population and has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mental illness generates, on the one hand, shame on the part of the patient themselves in disclosing their mental state and avoiding asking for help and, on the other hand, prejudice on the part of society, which doesn’t have enough information about the problem.

At this event, two experts in the field of mental health (a psychiatrist and a nursing lecturer) will explain the challenges for health professionals in their daily dealings with mental health patients and the difficulties they face in the National Health Service.

There will also be a magistrate from the Public Prosecutor’s Office who will explain to the audience the main changes brought about by the “New Mental Health Law”, critically reflecting on its impact from the practical perspective of the courts.
