Five years on since the GDPR came into force on 25 May 2018, it is important to assess the consistency of that legislation in the light of the new challenges posed to the protection of personal data. Does the GDPR adequately address the emerging challenges of profiling and inferred personal data? Or the challenges related to cities and businesses, the health sector and professional careers linked to data protection? To this end, the Justice and Governance Research Centre (JusGov) and the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in Digital Citizenship and Technological Sustainability (CitDig) have decided to make this “1st Ibero-American Congress on Digital Law and Technologies” under the theme “The Challenges of Personal Data Protection”, since the regulation of the digital ecosystem in the EU began precisely with the protection of personal data. This 1st Congress will debate the technical aspects of implementing the GDPR, the repercussions of the GDPR outside Europe, as well as the legal and fundamental challenges of protecting personal data.
