The central aim of this undertaking is to contribute to the consolidation and understanding of the principles of criminal justice in Portuguese-speaking countries and territories—principles which, in general terms, are directly or indirectly enshrined in the Constitutions of the respective States and in the Basic Law of the Macao Special Administrative Region. And if, in some instances, this is not the case, such principles are undoubtedly expressed in ordinary legislation, namely in criminal codes and codes of criminal procedure. In any event, whether by virtue of constitutional inscription or through sustained doctrinal scholarship, these principles already form part of the legal tradition of these countries and territories.
