JusGov – Research Centre for Justice and Governance – is honored to announce that Auxiliary Researcher Marta Santos Silva has, in recent months, achieved three major milestones at the European level, reflecting the growing impact of her work at the intersection of law and sustainability, as well as in the governance of international legal institutions.
First, Marta Santos Silva authored the European Law Institute (ELI) Innovation Paper entitled “Framework for Good Green Nudging”. This pioneering document, available in open access here, establishes eleven guiding principles aimed at public and private decision-makers in the design and implementation of soft law measures that encourage citizens to adopt sustainable behaviors. The main goal of this Framework is to ensure that these persuasion strategies – commonly known as nudges – are ethical, legally compliant, and effective, thus promoting sustainability in a responsible way. This work has the potential to influence public and private policies at both the European and international levels.
Secondly, the researcher was re-elected to the Council of the European Law Institute, the body responsible for supervising the institution’s overall functioning, approving projects, and defining strategic priorities, as well as deliberating on internal regulations and budgets. This re-election reflects the ongoing trust placed in Marta Santos Silva by the ELI community, recognizing her competence and commitment.
Lastly, Marta Santos Silva reached a historic milestone by being elected to the ELI Executive Committee, becoming the first Portuguese and one of the youngest researchers ever to join this body. The Executive Committee functions as the operational arm of the Council, being responsible for the day-to-day management of the institution, coordination of projects, and monitoring of strategic activities. This election represents an unequivocal recognition of Marta Santos Silva’s work and her vision for the future of the ELI, while also strengthening Portugal’s presence within institutions of European significance.
These three achievements highlight Marta Santos Silva’s scientific excellence and leadership skills, as well as the growing international projection of JusGov and the work carried out at the University of Minho. The researcher will continue to focus on the study and promotion of innovative legal solutions, with a special emphasis on Sustainable Production and Consumption Law and good governance.
