What is a judge to you? A man or woman dressed in black with a very serious expression, who is hard to understand when speaking about the law? What is their role in the justice system? What do judicial independence and impartiality mean? Do you know what the European Convention on Human Rights is… or are we speaking in “legalese”?

This initiative by JusGov (Research Centre for Justice and Governance), supported by the Planetarium – Braga Science House (Braga Ciência Viva Centre), aims to bring 4th grade pupils (aged 9–10) closer to the role of the judge in a state governed by the rule of law, exploring the judge’s function in society, the meaning of judicial independence and impartiality, and the significance of these and other concepts, with a special focus on the European Convention on Human Rights in its 75th anniversary year.

The young students will even have the chance to sit down for a conversation with a Justice of the Supreme Court!
