The growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in justice – risk prediction algorithms, IoT, Big Data, sophisticated software for doctrinal and jurisprudential research – raises fundamental questions about its legal and ethical limits.

If, on the one hand, AI promises gains in efficiency and procedural speed, on the other, we need to reflect on its impact on fundamental guarantees, the presumption of innocence and the very integrity of the rule of law.

On May 27, at 2:30 p.m., we will debate this topical issue at the UMinho School of Law, with perspectives from a lawyer, Daniel Torres Gonçalves, a magistrate, Ricardo Oliveira e Sousa, and a law lecturer, Catarina Sarmento e Castro.
