On 8 May 1945, the Second World War officially came to an end. In Germany, Adolf Hitler had died just days earlier, and Karl Dönitz signed the formal act of surrender, which was accepted by the Allied forces.
In many countries, this day is marked by a public holiday: it is celebrated as Victory Day over Fascism (Slovakia and Ukraine), Victory in Europe Day (France and the United Kingdom), or Liberation Day (the Netherlands).
In Portugal, the date often passes somewhat unnoticed. However, this year – marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and a time when the world order that emerged from it appears to be unravelling – it is especially fitting that, here at the University, we take this opportunity to reflect on the past 80 years, on the uncertain times we are living through, and on the ever-present need to prevent conflict and strive for peace.
The Master’s Programme in Human Rights is organising a day of reflection on this theme and invites the entire academic community to join in this shared endeavour: to reflect together on the means of preventing conflict and maintaining (or restoring) peace.
