On July 1st, during a meeting of the Council of the European Law Institute (ELI), the Guiding Principles for the Design and Implementation of Ecological “Nudges” were approved with 36 votes in favor, two votes against, and two abstentions. These principles, drafted by Marta Santos Silva, Postdoctoral Researcher at JusGov, will be officially published and disseminated in September.

Marta Santos Silva was tasked by the ELI to draft the third Innovation Paper of the European Legal Institute, focused on the Guiding Principles for the Design and Implementation of Ecological “Nudges.” This Innovation Paper includes 9 Guiding Principles, intended to inform and empower decision-makers in the design and implementation of the best ecological “nudges.”

The Innovation Papers of the European Legal Institute aim to allow its members to propose pioneering legal or multidisciplinary ideas that deserve the attention of the European legal community and seek to improve European Law. The draft Innovation Paper on the Guiding Principles for the Design and Implementation of Ecological “Nudges” was prepared following two successful meetings of the High-Level Expert Group chaired by the author.

The approval of these principles marks a significant step towards promoting legal practices that support environmental sustainability, providing clear and effective guidelines for the design of ecological policies.
