Synopsis Human Rights constitute a product of the history and specific values of Western civilization, which renders unsustainable – because illegitimate – any claims of a universal character. If what is wanted is respect for the fundamental dignity of all human beings, then it is important, first of all, to understand the importance of cultures in the conformation of the image that human beings make of themselves; of what they consider to be the sustenance of their dignity.
There is no single way to be a human. Even so, there is no single way to protect it through law. This is the meaning of the comparative analysis developed here that opposes the West and Islam, the two worlds which many consider to be the necessary protagonists of the “clash of civilizations” that overshadows the future.
