Synopsis This book gathers the contributions of researchers from the Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Human Rights(DH-CII), as well as from the Research Centre for Justice and Governance(JUSGOV) of the University of Minho and colleagues from other research centres such as the Laboratory of Criminal Sciences(LACRIM-UNIFOR). As a result of two seminars held in Brazil, a critical analysis of restorative justice is sought as a possible alternative or, at least complement the criminal justice system. Issues such as criminal guaranty and judicial activism are also addressed. This work, which is part of the JusGov Research Project, is to be continued through the JusCrim Group called Pena + Humana(Meaning and purpose of criminal sanctions: For a more humane system of penalties (+ Humane Penalties.) This project seeks to understand the meaning of the penalty, in order to make the penal system more humane.
