Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The partnership is intended to increase Portugal’s participation in the European Union’s litigation, specifically in referral to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). The protocol also involves universities located in Lisbon – Classical, New and Catholic – and was signed on April 4, 2014, in the State Protocol, Palácio das Necessidades, followed by lunch with the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Professor Rui Machete.

The DGAE ensures the representation of the Portuguese State in the CJEU and advocates on behalf of the Portuguese position in all cases that are of interest to Portugal pending before the European Union courts. To that extent, the purpose of the protocol is technical and there is to be legal cooperation between the DGAE and CEDU in the preparation of procedural documents to be submitted by the Portuguese Republic. Additionally, DGAE strives to provide traineeships to CEDU researchers, including the Permanent Representation of Portugal to the European Union (REPER) in Brussels.
