Postdoctoral Researcher Marta Santos Silva led the editorial team of the book “The Routledge Handbook of Private Law and Sustainability,” published by Routledge on June 5th. This new volume, partially available open access due to the sponsorship of the Manuel António da Mota Foundation, offers a deep reflection on how law can contribute to addressing current environmental challenges and making our societies more resilient to future crises.
Sustainability has been at the top of the political agenda since the approval of the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015 and the European Green Deal in 2019. This handbook brings together a selection of renowned thinkers in the field, providing a comprehensive and updated view of the most relevant discussions for private lawyers concerning environmental and sustainability issues.
The authors explore case study examples from 20 countries in Europe and beyond, discussing a wide range of topics, including new paradigms in property law and consumer law, the use of legal technology to promote sustainable property management, strategies to combat planned obsolescence, eco-design, the service economy, advancements in corporate climate litigation, and ecological incentives. The volume is designed to empower new generations of legal scholars to play an active role in the transition to a more sustainable future.
Additionally, the book aims to assist policymakers in developing better policies by identifying key legal issues that need to be addressed and offering a comparative view of legal solutions and best practices.
The launch of this handbook marks a significant step in the intersection of private law and sustainability, providing essential tools and knowledge to tackle the environmental challenges of our time.
