Project Description

European Law Moot Court Competition – Braga Regional Final | 16th and 18th February

CEDU organized a regional final of the European Law Moot Court Competition (ELMC) between 16 and 18 February 2012. ELMC is a highly international university competition in European Union Law. It is an event that promotes the study of EU law, which has the seal of the European institutions and mobilizes hundreds of European and North American universities.

For each of the 4 regional finals, 12 teams were selected from the resolution of a highly complex case. In 2012 the regional finals took place in Luxembourg, Braga, Lucerne and Istanbul – the final finale being held in the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). According to the Society promoter of the event (ELMC Society) “the level of participation was very high this year, with most teams presenting high quality work. Proof of this is the average score for the entire group of teams was 16.65.”

On February 17th, the competition took place at the Law School of the University of Minho and on the 18th at the premises of the Court of Appeal of Guimarães – the jury was composed by José Luís da Cruz Vilaça (President), Nuno Piçarra, Pedro Froufe, Miguel Martinez Gimeno, Rosa Greaves, James Flynn, Allan Tatham, Eric Pijnacker Hordijk and Robert Lane. The teams of the following universities have been competing in Braga: Leiden, Faculté de Droit and Science Politique d’Aix-en-Provence, Utrecht, Nancy 2, The Law Society of Ireland, Luzern University, Osnabrück, Eotvos Lorand University, University of Amsterdam , University of Zagreb, King’s College London and University of Maribor. The team selected for the final in the CJEU was King’s College London.

CEDU thanks all those who contributed to putting Braga and Guimarães in the circuit of this competition – which fortunately coincides with the initiatives “Braga: European Capital of Youth 2012” and “Guimarães: European Capital of Culture”. To this end, CEDU had the financial partnership of the Portuguese Association of European Law (APDE), Bracara Augusta Foundation, “Guimarães, European Capital of Culture”, Guimarães City Council, UNICER, Vieira lawyers de Almeida, PLMJ, MLGTS and FSA – Fernando Alberto, Gomes Alves, Marcos da Silva, Vieira de Castro and Associates, and the hotel group “Grupo Bom Jesus”. It also has the collaboration of the AAUM (Academic Association of the University of Minho) and ELSA-UMinho (European Law Students Association – University of Minho).
