A significant milestone in European policy-making was reached on November 18 with the publication of the new directive on product liability, the result of extensive collaboration between leading legal experts and policymakers.  Among the contributors is Marta Santos Silva, a Postdoctoral Researcher at JusGov, who participated in the Expert Group on New Technologies – Product Liability Formation, working alongside eminent European academics in the field of product liability. Their collective expertise shaped discussions over the past two years, culminating in a directive that reflects the ever-evolving challenges of new technologies and sustainability.

“This is one of the proudest moments of my career,” shared Marta Santos Silva, emphasizing the enriching dialogue with stakeholders and policymakers. A personal highlight for Marta was the inclusion of provisions related to the circular economy in the directive. “This directive reaffirms the need for ambitious changes to support sustainability.

It is gratifying to know that the academic contributions I have advocated in this field have helped shape policies that will make a real difference,” she stated.

The new directive represents a significant step forward in ensuring corporate responsibility and environmental sustainability, aligning legal frameworks with the European Green Deal and promoting a sustainable future.
