Ep. 12 – The World of Artificial Intelligence

With the aim of addressing longstanding issues and unveiling new challenges in the legal field—while contributing to the advancement of new avenues of scientific research—the “Quid Juris Podcast” was created.

This initiative, developed by the JusGov Researchers’ School—part of the Research Centre for Justice and Governance at the School of Law of the University of Minho—features, on a regular basis, distinguished professionals who engage in discussions on pressing legal topics.

The evolution of technology, and in particular, the emergence of artificial intelligence across multiple domains of our lives, has posed significant challenges to the field of law. Although this global debate is still in its early stages, it demands our attention. In a conversation dedicated to the world of (artificial) intelligence, we bring together two legal scholars and a computer engineer to explore the contours of this new reality—or artificiality?

Professor Nuno Sousa e Silva is a lecturer at the School of Law of Porto, Catholic University of Portugal, as well as a practicing lawyer, legal consultant, and arbitrator.

Professor Paulo Novais is a lecturer at the School of Engineering of the University of Minho and leads the ISLab Laboratory at the ALGORITMI Centre. In recognition of his scientific contributions to artificial intelligence and his role in fostering the development of this field, he was awarded the Career Recognition Award by the Ibero-American Society of Artificial Intelligence (IBERAMIA) in 2022.

Professor Francisco Andrade is a lecturer at the School of Law of the University of Minho, a researcher at JusGov, and the director of the Master’s Program in Law and Informatics. He has authored numerous national and international publications, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence.
