Gema Souto, JusGov researcher, and Tiago Bonjardim, President of the Criminology Students’ Association of the University of Minho, together with other members of the Association’s Executive Board, took part as speakers on May 7 in the participatory session entitled “Ethics in the Field of Artificial Intelligence: When Machines Assume the Human Role”, organised by the Planetário – Casa da Ciência (Centro Ciência Viva de Braga). The event continued the collaboration between these institutions, which began in November 2025.

During an open discussion involving members of the public and moderated by Luís Azevedo, Director of the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos, the speakers addressed issues such as judicial independence and the reasoning and explainability of judicial decisions in the age of artificial intelligence, as well as criminology and the use of AI tools. The session was highly dynamic, encouraging reflection and an exchange of ideas among participants and attendees from a wide range of scientific backgrounds. The event took place within the framework of the partnership between the Centro Ciência Viva de Braga and the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos, as part of the project “Braga, Ciência em Rede”, supported by the PESSOAS 2030 programme and co-funded by the European Union.
