We are delighted to report that Filipe Venade de Sousa, researcher at the JusGov — Research Centre for Justice and Governance of the School of Law of the University of Minho, will present the lecture “Deafology as a legal-cultural framework: towards Deaf Studies at the intersection of law, language, and culture” during a Plenary Session “Deaf Studies: Knowledge, Culture, Identity” at the Interdisciplinary Conference “Researching the Deaf Community 2025: On the Periphery of Attention” (RDC), part of the “Deaf and Voiced” programme.
Hosted by the GES-2 House of Culture in Moscow from 17-19 October 2025, the RDC gathers interdisciplinary voices exploring the Deaf Community’s visibility, identity, and cultural/legal rights. At the intersection of law, language, and culture, Filipe Venade de Sousa’s presentation proposes “Deafology” as a framework to better articulate how Deaf identity is shaped by and shapes legal and linguistic norms.
Our researcher’s involvement in the RDC is of considerable relevance both to the JusGov community and to broader human rights movement, underscoring the value of multidisciplinarity in advancing the rights of Deaf people, unraveling how law, language policy, and cultural recognition intersect. Such collaboration not only enriches human understanding but have the potential to influence policy and practice in meaningful, inclusive ways.
