Robert Junqueira asks whether legal reasoning can become species-agnostic without becoming species-blind. He argues that law should not treat species as a dispositive shortcut, but must still specify the capacities, harms, duties, representatives, and institutions that make animal rightsholding legally intelligible. Junqueira’s focus is on the grammar of moral status: how law can move from anti-speciesist critique to responsible claims about animal rights without slogans, rights inflation, or false equivalence with human citizenship. This presentation, chaired by Arellys Merchan, is part of the 2026 JusGov Internship Programme with the University of Pennsylvania.
