On December 7 the 2nd Meeting of EU Law Professors will take place (Noble Auditorium, Escola de Direito da Universidade do Minho – EDUM, Braga). It consists of an initiative of the Jean Monnet Chairs in EU Law in the north of Portugal – Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Porto) and Universidade do Minho (Braga) – to discuss the multiple issues associated with the legal culture of the European integration.

As of this edition the Meeting will be thematic – under the title “Union based on the rule of law and Digital Single Market” – and will follow a workshop format. The digital theme emerges from the Jean Monnet project INTEROP – “EU Digital Single Market as a political calling: interoperability as the way forward” – a project developed by EDUM researchers, with the scientific coordination of Alessandra Silveira. Among other objectives, the project seeks to discuss with European policy makers the direction to be drawn for the Single Digital Market, what its potential and weaknesses are, and what to expect regarding its fulfilment and impact in the Member States.

The European Commission has argued that digital is the greatest challenge the EU faces today to ensure its competitiveness in the world – this is because the digital economy is changing the way we live, how we relate, how we consume. In a particularly decisive moment for the future of Europe, the 2nd Meeting aims to bring together Professors and Researchers of EU Law from the Portuguese public universities and to make them reflect on the main problems concerning the digitization process that we are experiencing.

In addition to the institutional opening session, the 2nd Meeting will have an inaugural conference given by judges of the CJEU, as well as three sessions dedicated to the following topics:

* European citizenship (“citizenship of rights”) in the digital age

* Shared economy, competition and regulation

* Judicial integration and electronic justice
