On March 3, CEDU researchers participated in the radio programme “O Estado da União” (a partnership between Centro de Informação Europe Direct Minho, Antena Minho and Correio do Minho). Apart from the intervention of Alessandra Silveira, resident commentator at the program and holder of the Jean Monnet Chair in European Union Law at UMinho, this episode counted on the participation of Sandra Fernandes (professor of International Relations at the UMinho’s School of Economics and Management) and Francisco Pereira Coutinho (deputy director of the NOVA School of Law).

The COVID-19 pandemic and its socio-economic consequences have had a negative impact on human rights, deepening pre-existing inequalities and increasing pressure on people in vulnerable situations. In the February edition of the programme “O Estado da União”, speakers explained the extent to which the promotion and protection of Human Rights is central to the European Union’s external action, as well as the vicissitudes of its interaction with geopolitical issues, especially considering the European Union’s relations with Russia, China and the United States. The European Union’s priorities in its relations with third countries (defined in the EU Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy 2020-2024) were identified, as well as the regime of measures and the adoption of sanctions to combat serious violations of Human Rights (in the light of Regulation 2020/1998 of 7 December 2020).

The radio programme “O Estado da União” is broadcast by Antena Minho (106.0 FM), on the last Wednesday of each month, at 7 pm, and aims to discuss the current European situation. The conversation is usually chaired by Alzira Costa, coordinator of the Centro de Informação Europe Direct Minho, and by Paulo Monteiro, Rádio Antena Minho Director.
