European Law Moot Court Competition – final | February 6th-8th

The University of Minho Center of Studies in Law of the European Union (CEDU) was invited for the second time in 3 years to organize a regional final of the European Law Moot Court Competition – the most prestigious international university competition in law of the European Union. The competition has the seal of the European institutions and the finale takes place in the Court of Justice of the European Union (Luxembourg) with royal judges.

For each of the 4 regional finals were selected 12 teams from the resolution of a case of high complexity. The Regional Final of Braga started on Thursday (February 6) with the reception of teams that competed throughout the day on Friday (February 7) at the premises of the Law School and on Saturday (February 8) in the premises of the Court of Relation of Guimarães. The remaining regional finals took place in Aix en Provence (France), Torino (Italy) and Bratislava (Slovakia).

The following universities were present in Braga and Guimarães: Genève (Switzerland), Heidelberg (Germany), Boston (USA), European University Institute – Florence (Italy), Uppsala (Sweden), Antwerp (Belgium), Latvia , Aix en Marseille (France), Maastricht (Netherlands), Paris Dauphine (France), Torino (Italy), Comenius (Bratislava), bringing together participants from 21 nationalities.

The judges of the competition were Robert Lane (Edinburgh), Tommy Pettersson (Stockholm), Stefaan Van den Bogaert (Leiden), Erik Pijnacker (Amsterdam), Philippe De Baere (Brussels), Carlos Botelho Moniz, Francisco Pereira Coutinho, Luis the Valley and Mariana Canotilho.

The team selected for the final of the competition to be held at the Court of Justice of the European Union was the University of Maastricht.

The final of the competition took place in the ECJ, Luxembruro, on March 28, 2014, with the presence of 10 royal judges of that Court. The champion team of the competition was selected in the Regional Final of Braga: Maastricht University

Finalist: University of Lund, Sweden

Semi-Finalists: Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium & University of Michigan, United States of America.

Semi-Finalist General Lawyer: Free University of Brussels, Belgium.

Semi-Finalist Representative of the Commission: University of Maastricht, The Netherlands.
